Is a Colon Detox Really a Good Idea?
If you want to lose weight and improve your overall health a colon cleanse may be just what you need. Working as a nutritional coach several years ago, I taught 12-weekly lessons to a room full of men and women who wanted to lose weight, eat healthier, and create a healthier lifestyle. At every meeting, participants would record their weight and then tell the group about any successes. The top three weight loser received awards at the end of the class and the top loser reduced approximately 24 pounds.
One of the classes I enjoyed teaching most was about the benefits of keeping your colon clean. I would always the meeting telling the participants that today we are going to talk about “poop”. Detoxing the body can be an important part of maintaining overall health. Just imagine what your toilet would look like if you never cleaned it for decades. In addition, although our toilets have a flushing system, it is still necessary to scrub the sides on a regular basis.
Just like toilets, our colons need to be cleaned on a regular basis as well. Unfortunately, most peoples colons don’t function as well as their toilet bowl where hardened feces attaches itself to the sides. This inhibits the colon from absorbing vitamins and minerals necessary for overall health. What’s worse, these toxins remain in your blood stream.
A colon that functions properly can improve your health so you want to keep it clean and eliminate regularly. A high fiber diet that includes an abundance of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains will keep your colon working efficiently. On average, you should have at least one or more bowel movement per day. If you are having anything less, it’s time to take action. Eating foods that promote frequent colon elimination is the best way to keep your colon and body healthy.
The symptoms of a poor functioning colon include constipation, gas, indigestion, bloating, and a protruding belly. I have read that some people may have up to 20 pounds of compacted and hardened feces attached to their colon wall. That is one reason a colon cleanse is an important aspect of a weight loss or detoxification program. Although you may eat nutritious meals, if your colon is not functioning optimally, those healthy foods cannot be absorbed or may ferment in your body, releasing unhealthy toxins. There are many other symptoms that are often related to a poor or sluggish colon, these include headaches, backaches, cramps, fatigue, IBS, and colon cancer.
The colon also contains good bacteria or healthy digestive flora that aids in elimination and digestion. When your colon is working properly, toxic pathogens and harmful bacteria cannot grow and reproduce. Colon cleansing also restores proper PH balance and support a healthy immune system.
Constipation results when the bowels don’t move frequently. Many people rely on laxatives in order to have a bowel movement. A colon cleanse keeps your bowels regular and restores the natural peristalsis of the colon. When your colon muscles contract and push stool through your large intestine, it is called peristalsis. I recommend doing a colon cleanse in conjunction with a detox to facilitate the elimination of toxins that you are releasing into the body. In fact, a detox is one of the best times to do a colon cleanse or even have a series of colonics.
